Stacie Smith... Artist. Comedian. Musician. Thespian. Hairsmith.
You can see her chalkboard drawings at Art House's 11th annual 5 x 7 fundraiser that starts tonight. Hundreds of artists with Texas ties have created unique 5 x 7 pieces that all sell for $100. All pieces are anonymous until purchased.
Stacie has some of her large abstract pieces in her hip South Austin hair studio. While in the chair for a long needed haircut yesterday she described her iconic portraits for the 5 x 7 show. Frontiersmen (pictured left) are chalk on plywood. The set features Clark & Lewis, Crockett & Boone (top row); Wild Bill & Doris Day as Calamity Jane in the Musical Calamity Jane, Crying Indian & Woodsy (second row); Mr. Clean & Brawny (70s version), Laverne & Shirley (third row). Hilarious word handler that she is commented on a friend saying "don't you mean Lewis & Clark, not Clark & Lewis". Stacie said "why is it always Lewis & Clark when C comes before L anyway? I bet that really pissed Clark off too!."

Stacie recently had a show of her large, abstract colorful pieces at The Continental Club Gallery. She had been making the pieces for herself when Steve challenged her to get 20 together for a show at the gallery. She made 50! The abstract piece pictured to the right is called Breaking Up is Hard to Do because she didn't want to part with it if it sold.
I first met Stacie years ago when a mutual friend was in her band Morningwood in the late 1990s. She was the lead singer and performed songs such as Narcoleptic, Ice Skater, Prom Night 79 and the local radio hit Incestuous Town. Since then we found we even have a common friend in Los Angeles that she was in theater school with in San Diego.
Stacie has been cutting hair for 16 years and she is the only hair smith that can cut this thin fine hair of mine. She is currently working on portraits of people and can be contacted for portraits of your friends and family or iconic figures you love.
